How to Answer “Tell Me About Yourself” in a Job Interview

Why this question matters

“Tell me about yourself” often sounds like an easy opening question, but it can shape the direction of the whole interview.

The interviewer is not asking for your full career history. They want a concise explanation of who you are professionally, what is relevant about your experience and why that makes sense for this role.

A simple structure to use

Use three parts:

1. Where you are now

Give a short overview of your current role, area of expertise or professional focus.

2. What makes you relevant

Choose one or two pieces of experience that connect directly to the job you are interviewing for.

3. Why this opportunity makes sense

Finish by explaining why the role is a logical next step.

Example answer

I currently work in project support, where I coordinate stakeholders, track delivery and help keep projects moving against deadlines. Over the last few years I’ve taken on more responsibility for reporting and stakeholder communication, which is something I particularly enjoy. I’m now looking for a role where I can build on that experience and take greater ownership of project delivery, which is why this opportunity stood out to me.

What to avoid

• Starting with your childhood or education unless it is genuinely relevant.

• Talking through your entire CV chronologically.

• Giving a five-minute answer.

• Using a generic answer that could apply to any job.

• Forgetting to connect your experience back to the role.

The goal
